Materials: potatoes, sturdy drinking straws
Demonstration: Grasp a sturdy drinking straw with your dominant hand, covering the top end with your thumb. Using your other hand, keep your fingers on the front of the potato and your thumb on the back of the potato (not on the top and bottom of the potato). Holding firmly to both the straw and the potato, make a quick, sharp stab into the narrow end of the potato. The straw should quickly emerge through the hole you have made. Read more »

“What a Series!” read the headline on Monday, November 3, 1975 after the Cincinnati Reds defeated the Boston Red Sox in the seventh game of the World Series with a series score of 4-3. For the first time in 35 years, the Cincinnati Reds were baseball’s World Champions. Many people remember Carlton Fisk’s legendary game-winning homer in the bottom of the twelfth of Game 6, but he never would have had that opportunity if it were not for Bernie Carbo. In the eighth inning with two outs and two strikes, Carbo pinch-hit a 3-run homer that tied the score at 6-6. Carbo’s pinch homer was his second of the Series, tying a Series record. Read more »

Fox’s Book of Martyrs is found in the history section of the library. And for most of us, martyrdom is an ugly period in history when Christians were persecuted, tortured, and killed for their faith. But for Adeel Nazir, persecution is still a very real thing. Adeel is a 25- year-old graduate student at Hyles- Anderson College. At first appearance, he seems like any one of the hundreds of other bright young men studying to be a pastor. Outwardly, there is nothing to indicate the burdens and memories that he carries with him to class every day. Read more »
